For some people diet can do wonders! It makes me hopeful....It sounds like this guy, like Dorothy Walls, was on his last legs - when he turned to, yes, diet.

(First he was diagnosed with chronic fatigue but unlike many of us it turned out to be MS (which brings up the question whether the two diseases could start out the same - but then branch off at some point.)
From Multiple Sclerosis to Mastering Mountains- Nick Allen’s miraculous journey
Every so often you hear stories about people achieving milestones and mighty feats that to the rest of us, seem nigh-on impossible. Nick Allen is one of those people, his story is nothing short of miraculous and downright awe-inspiring!

This week Nick Allen left New Zealand to pursue his life’s dream, to climb the mountains of the Himalayas and reach Everest Base Camp. But Nick is not your normal, fit and athletic mountaineer.

(HE DOESN"T LOOK LIKE HE HAS MS ANYMORE! )

About Nick and living with Multiple Sclerosis

Nick is a young New Zealander living with Multiple Sclerosis, an incurable disease with no known cause that afflicts over 2.5 million people worldwide. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system. Its symptoms can include blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, blindness and more.

Growing up Nick dreamed of climbing Mt Everest. He was passionate about being in the wilderness, climbing to the highest peaks and feeling on top of the world. His life centered around tramping, camping and climbing- the beautiful, rugged landscapes of New Zealand were his playground, the great outdoors his home.

But at the age of 21, Nick’s wild adventures came to an abrupt halt. He was struck down with inexplicable chronic fatigue, muscle weakness and various health complaints. Over the next few years Nick’s health deteriorated until he was unable to walk unassisted and was forced to use a mobility scooter to get around.

“I was unable to walk on any uneven surface because of poor balance, and could not walk for more than five or ten minutes at a time due to fatigue. Mountains began to represent the impossible and insurmountable – a failed dream,” recalls Nick.

The diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis was heart-breaking and life-changing.

Radical life changes to beat the disease

Battling severe depression and a debilitating illness, Nick knew he had to make some radical changes in order to start truly living again. He contacted a physical therapist and a specialist personal trainer and took a dramatic new approach to his diet. This meant cutting out anything that could negatively impact his health, avoiding fat, sugar, dairy and packaged and processed foods. Nick’s new diet focused instead on whole raw foods and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

After many years of consistent rehabilitation and gym work combined with a good healthy diet, Nick is back! Back in the mountains he loves so much with a personal mission to help others explore the therapeutic and invigorating benefits of being out in the natural environment.

This reminded me of Roger Mcdougall's story which I came across many moons ago relating to diet and MS. Roger had MS and was in a wheelchair. He made up his mind to go very pristine with his diet.............a caveman diet is what he called it.......................long story short he stuck to the diet but it wasn't until 4 years into the diet that he started to notice improvements...............talk about perseverance! Anyway...........he is no longer in a wheelchair and considers himself in remission........he doesn't like the word cured. http://www.direct-ms.org/rogermcdougall

It's rather amazing. I've never gone that far. I have a very good diet - but do I need to go further? That question definitely nags at me...

@Cort ............It has also made me re-think about how long to trial any given protocol (not just diet)...............I don't think I've given any protocol longer than maybe 4-5 months?

@Cort and @Tammy7,

Your discussion gave me another clue why I recovered. Before I stop anything once I start I at least followed for two years or more.

I have number of recovery stories who recovered only by using diet - no supplement, no yoga, etc. For me I could not follow the diet continuously mainly I do not cook, I have to ask my family to cook. I tried to learn, but lack of energy and other pressing needs distracted me. Plus finance played its own role. Now I got present to another missing aspect in my protocol.

I have two first hand recovery stories from my life I wold like to share.

1. My 65 year young grandmother. She was advised knee replacement surgery and was overweight. With the fear of surgery she lost between 20 to 30 pounds in 10 months only by eating less and regular walking. She is completely back to her teens energy levels surprised doctors on her recovery. Now she is 70 years young, lives in NY.

2. I observed a couple in India who switched to completely organic food in 2010, stopped rice and wheat based diet, and consumed only millet based diet and use regular Indian cooking methods and tasting spices . They recovered from back pain problem in two years, whereas experts suggested surgery. They enjoy very good energy levels from morning to evening. They do not take dietary supplements or practice yoga. When I observed them I could see the vitality in their face. Now they cater the same food for functions to create awareness.

The understanding is - with good diet any one from any disorder can recover.

The question are- What is the good diet? How do we find for each one of us?

Have fun,

Hari

What is the right diet for each of us is a great question - unfortunately it appears that finding out what it requires a lot of trial and error - but that is the way it is.
