[/fright]I've been eyeing this stuff for awhile. It's expensive - $7 a bottle but its also concentrated - they recommend a shot or two a day.

This is what they say about it

Farmhouse Culture Gut Shot is a probiotic rich beverage with a bold, savory taste. We make Gut Shot by fermenting organic veggies and then pressing them to release all the vibrant juices brimming with live active cultures. Gut Shot is a convenient way to help keep your gut healthy and well balanced.

I'm in So Cal for a wedding and am exhausted! So I picked up a bottle of gut shot with beets, ginger and sauerkraut.

And it actually works. It's rejuvenating - really quite rejuvenating. I don't get this affect from bottled sauerkraut but I also get it from Farmhouse Cultures "live sauerkraut" which is also very expensive.

I don't get the effect from sauerkraut that I make for some reason. I wish I could duplicate it - and I don't know why I can't. I've used their sauerkraut as a fermenting agent but it just doesn't do.

The same is true of kefir with one difference. I get a rejuvenating effect from home-made kefir but not from store bought kefir - two very different animals.

:
@Cort I have been eyeballing them too!! But they sound like they may taste horrible...
:)

They do, don't they.

I have a high tolerance for nasty tasting stuff but I think the beet is OK. The thing is that you take small sips - so it's not so bad.

1. I have been drinking Kevita Sparkling Probiotic drink which has some excellent strains: L Plantarum; Bacillus Coagulans; and L Rhamnosus. I like it b/c it's not too sugary, and the Kevita Tonic has even lower sugar...

2. GoodBelly Probiotic Juice Drink is Okay.... too sweet for me, and only one strain, I believe (l plantarum)

3. Trader Joe's Kefir is actually the best kefir that I've found for good strains:

** L PLANTARUM - not typically in kefir
http://probiotics.org/l-plantarum/
http://worldofenzymes.info/probiotics/lactobacillus-plantarum/
  • reduces intestinal inflammation
  • HISTAMINE DEGRADING; reduces viral effects & allergies
  • reduces gut wall permeability
  • prokinetic agent, promotes weight loss
  • PSYCHOBIOTIC - improves ADD/ADHD; restores cognitive function, enhances memory
  • increase mucus in the intestines
  • oxalate degrading
  • lowers tyramine; no effect on histamine

** L RHAMNOSUS
http://probiotics.org/lactobacillus-gg-benefits/
  • DOWN-REGULATE HISTAMINE RECEPTORS
  • prokinetic agent & reduces diarrhea
  • lowers obesity
  • anti-inflammatory; lowers CRP
  • PSYCHOBIOTIC - GABA; vagal nerve

** B LONGUM - not typically in kefir
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bifidobacterium_longum#Immune_system_regulation
  • PSYCHOBIOTIC - reduces stress; vagal nerve
  • immune modulator; anti-oxident effect (from hayfever to minimizing flu/cold symptoms to lowering cancer tumor incidence & volume - notably, colorectal cancer)
  • anti-inflammatory effect on skin AND also reinforces skin barrier function (improves leaky gut??)
  • improves lactose tolerance & improves food allergies
  • scavenges free radicals
  • lowers serum cholesterol; improves cholesterol usage… unclear to me what exactly the mechanisms -> benefit(s) pathways
  • high colonic pH = colon cancer; b longum inhibits colon cancer by producing bile acid and cholesterol metabolites that lower intestinal pH

Just got two bottles of Gut Shot at Costco for $6.99 (woo-woo). Its been months since I tried them - once again - a nice little boost!

Maybe it's a synergistic effect of the ingredients. That's one thing that's supposed to good about kimchee. Also, there's something magical about ginger. And if the ginger gets fermented too in the mix, all the better. And maybe the variety of ingredients makes for happier bacteria and happier bacteria=happy host. 😁
