Heart rate variability (HRV) tests indicate that parasympathetic nervous system activity - which is triggered by the vagus nerve - is reduced in chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and fibromyalgia. Low HRV is associated with increased pain, poor sleep and cognitive problems in ME/CFS and/or FM.

Could increasing vagus nerve activity help? One small fibromyalgia study with dramatic results suggests it could. Ben Natelson, a longtime ME/CFS/FM researcher and doctor, said the results "blew him away" and that he had never seen results like that in fibromyalgia
