The Bateman Horne Center of Excellence

The Organization for Fatigue & Fibromyalgia Education & Research (OFFER)

Right now, in the state of Utah alone, there are thousands of people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (also called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or ME/CFS) and Fibromyalgia (FM) who have not been properly diagnosed or offered effective treatments. Unfortunately, many are disabled by their illness. An important reason for the lack of accurate and timely diagnosis and effective treatment is clearly stated on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website: “Researchers have not yet identified what causes CFS, and there are no tests to diagnose CFS.” “Despite a vigorous search, scientists have not yet identified what causes CFS.”

ME/CFS and FM are illnesses that often cause complete disability. Those afflicted are often at a loss to explain why they are unable to perform even the simplest of physical tasks. According to the most recent statistics on the CDC website, over one million Americans suffer with ME/CFS, more than multiple sclerosis, lupus, and many forms of cancer. Over five million adults are struggling with FM. The majority of those who become ill with ME/CFS and FM are women, but these illnesses can and do afflict men and children as well. A National Institute of Health (NIH) study showed the direct and indirect cost of ME/CFS to society in the U.S. is between $18 billion and $23 billion per year. The CDC reported that the direct and indirect cost of FM to society in the U.S. is over $29 billion per year.
Based upon the CDC estimates, roughly 10,000 people in Utah have ME/CFS and at least 50,000 have FM. Due to the limited definitive knowledge and understanding of these illnesses most of these patients are unable to find clinicians who can provide informed diagnosis and treatment to help resolve the many and varied challenges that come with these pernicious illnesses.

The Fatigue Consultation Clinic (FCC) was founded in Utah by Dr. Lucinda Bateman in 2001 in response to these needs. She is the primary physician in Utah who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and study of these debilitating illnesses. Dr. Bateman has become a nationally respected expert in the field of ME/CFS and FM. Over the years, as her patient base grew and her knowledge and understanding of these illnesses grew, she expanded her clinic to focus on research as well as clinical diagnosis and treatment. Her clinic has been recruited to participate in a number of national research projects due to the strategic value of her pool of patients and her expertise in this area. The FCC Research Department has concluded or is presently participating in more than 30 clinical studies. Dr. Bateman is a research partner with the University of Utah, the CDC, the Chronic Fatigue Initiative, the Chronic Fatigue Immune Deficiency Syndromes Association of America (CFIDS), and major pharmaceuticals such as Pfizer, Lilly and Merck.
Unfortunately, Dr. Bateman’s clinic is able to evaluate and treat only 10-20% of the patients who call or have been referred by healthcare providers for consultation. It’s imperative that the 80%-90% now turned away have access to expert evaluation and individualized treatment plans. It is also critical that many of these new patients have the opportunity to be included in the future research in this burgeoning field of study.

The Organization for Fatigue & Fibromyalgia Education & Research (OFFER) is a Utah-based, 501(c) (3), non-profit corporation devoted to bettering the lives of those with ME/CFS and FM, and fostering research that leads to better treatments. OFFER has successfully filled a great need in our community and beyond, including hosting biannual medical conferences, monthly free education meetings open to the general public, a monthly e-newsletter, a strong internet presence viewed in over 150 countries resulting in over 670,000 minutes of life-changing help and encouragement, and much more.
.

But more can be done to serve literally thousands of individual patients. OFFER is now dedicated to creating the facility that will insure Dr. Bateman’s knowledge and efforts are preserved, shared and expanded in the near future.
The OFFER Board has a goal of raising $1.5 million to launch this vital new clinic.
OFFER’s objectives:

  1. Create a non-profit Center of Excellence absorbing and expanding FCC resources to serve more people afflicted with CFS and FM and expand existing FCC research capabilities ;
  2. Improve and increase access to professional clinical training and research opportunities;
  3. Expand the FCC database of well-defined patients to facilitate CFS and FM research regionally, nationally, and internationally
This is how your donation will be used:
  1. We will hire additional physicians and staff and incorporate volunteer support to expand delivery of services and research.
  2. We will make supportive care modalities available to patients including collaboration with an outside network of specialists who are willing to develop ME/CFS and FM expertise.
  3. We will create an environment that will foster the education and training of additional physicians, providers and therapists.
We will create The Bateman Horne Center, a center of excellence in Utah that would effectively utilize state of the art knowledge concerning the diagnosis, clinical management, treatment, and clinical research of persons with ME/CFS and FM. This center would be modeled after existing centers of excellence with funding in the range of $1.5 million over three years.
This PayPal donation button is specifically intended to be used for the Center of Excellence. Your contribution will be used specifically for the new clinic.

My daughter has an appointment with Dr B next week. I'll see if we can get some insight :) The new chair of OFFER is a healthcare visionary--he was able to marshal the resources of the Salt Lake community to found a phenomenally successful clinic for the homeless. The clinic now works with the University of Utah medical school and other healthcare entities to provide services, classes, pharmaceutical support etc. The model could work for an ME/CFS/SEID clinic, especially with so many patients that struggle with disability payments, insurance coverage and financial hardship. If anyone can help OFFER go big, Allan Ainsworth has the skill and the vision. (To learn about what he accomplished for the homeless, Google: Fourth Street Clinic Salt Lake City)

WOW!
That is just what they need...
That is great news.
I would love to do an interview with him and spread the word if that would help.
I see they're going to have a new website - I'll bet that was priority number one.
Looking forward to hearing what happened.
