The Broken Brain Series

[/fright]Health Rising hasn't been promoting many online health talks as they seem to recycle presentations from summit to summit, but Dr. Hyman commands a lot of respect in the functional medicine community. Among other things he's the director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine (yes, it's that Cleveland Clinic), is Bill Clinton's doctor and was credited with turning Bill Clinton's health around.

He also came down with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) at one time. In fact, it was his bout with ME/CFS which ultimately lead him to take a functional medicine approach in his practice. Stating that "This topic is near and dear to my heart" Hyman reported:

When I was a young doctor, I suddenly got very ill with chronic fatigue syndrome. Every system in my body broke down. I couldn’t even walk up the stairs; I developed intense brain fog; and I was exhausted all the time. This is when I discovered Functional Medicine and created a plan for myself to heal my body of this debilitating syndrome.

Does functional medicine work for everyone? Obviously not, but for some it does and others it will surely help. Hyman has a big media presence - Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, CNN, etc. - but, as I noted before, he is also quite respected in the field.

Bredesen Speaks

Hyman is good, but the speaker I'm really interested in is Dr. Dale E. Bredesen, a UCLA professor, who has reversed dementia using a functional medicine approach. I believe that his book - The End of Alzheimer's: The First Programme to Prevent and Reverse the Cognitive Decline of Dementia which will be covered in a blog - has real relevance for people with ME/CFS and FM.

Bredesen's MEND protocol was covered in an earlier post:

[/fright]Just the Brain

The Broken Brain Series is not focused on ME/CFS or FM. Neither, in fact, are mentioned, but it hits on topics that are important to both diseases such as the gut/brain connection, dementia (increased in FM), ADHD (present in FM), depression/anxiety (common in chronic illnesses) and then finally Hyman's road map to better brain health.
Hyman says "You might be surprised to hear that treating patients with ADHD or on the autism spectrum does not look so different from treating patients who have dementia or other illnesses."

The Broken Brain Series
  • Day 1: The Broken Brain Epidemic / My Story
  • Day 2: Gut Brain Connection: Getting to The Root of a Broken Brain
  • Day 3: Losing Our Minds (Alzheimer’s, Dementia & MS)
  • Day 4: ADHD & Autism
  • Day 5: Depression & Anxiety
  • Day 6: Traumatic Brain Injury (Accidents, Sports, & More)
  • Day 7: 7 Steps to An UltraMind (Part 1)
  • Day 8: 7 Steps to An UltraMind (Part 2)
During the last two days, Hyman says "We take all of the advice outlined by our experts and turn them into practical steps that you can take today toward a better brain."

I haven't seen the series but I think it's worth a shot.

As with these online series, once you're registered you can watch each presentation on the day it's shown for free. If you want to get all the presentations and watch them at your leisure, you have to buy the series. Health Rising is an affiliate for this series; if you buy the presentations, HR will get some funds.

WOW! Finally something that is the heart of the worst of the symptoms that I personally struggle with 24/7- For years I have tried and tried and tried and tried... to explain how my head feels. How I am unable to think things through. When I attempt to start a task of any sorts I tire quickly. Then the sever burning all over my head. When I attempt to go back to what I was doing I have no clue where I left off or how to go about what I was working on.
Yes - MY BRAIN IS BROKEN. IT IS LIVING HELL.

I owned and operated my 3 different successful business over 20 years. Then with sudden unknown reasons I started blacking out? Then I had difficulty concentrating. (POTS-Dysautonomia-?) Now going on 8 years....
I can carry a conversation for a while so people think I’m OK. I spend 95% of my time alone. I miss working professionally with people everyday. I dream of being able to do that to some degree.

I have many other ME/CFS comorbide symptoms I struggle with, yet this to me is by far the worst.

Thank you so very much Cort for posting this! I hope there is hope for myself and others. I hope some Medical Practitioners will be viewing this and take this issue seriously. :nurse:.....

Sounds very interesting but I wasn't able to get the link to register to work. Is there a certain time to see it each day? Thanks, Ruth

I have not seen this seminar, but am very familiar with FM. Early in my ME/CFS I was in a downward spiral, mostly bedridden, could hardly tolerate any food, lights, noise, and was not doing well. And I credit a Functional Medicine certified MD for probably saving my life. This is in my opinion the most credible approach to blending natural medicine with traditional/allopathic. My FM doctor also had CFS himself, and recovered. I went from about 5% functional to about 40%. Sadly I have not been able to improve much from there, but at least I got part of my life back. Functional Medicine was new to me because I had worked only with traditional medicine, about a dozen different doctors with almost as many specialties. But one FM doctor turned things around for me.

This was about 15 years ago, today, there is so much information available, I can't think of much he tested and treated that most ME/CFS patients would not find online to read about. Things like testing for food allergies, adrenal cycle testing, liver function, digestive system functional testing, testing for Lyme and co-infections, parasites, and so on. He put me on a special diet, added neutraceuticals, treated candida and a few other infections I had (both with conventional abx and natural anti-microbials), and had the entire family tested for Lyme. He also tested for mold (using Shoemaker's test), put me on a B12 injection protocol that helped through a difficult move (to reduce mold exposure), and helped me get SSDI.

I think a Functional Medicine approach might help other ME/CFS patients who do not have access to a CFS specialist... although probably FM works best if the practitioner knows something about how ME/CFS is different from other conditions they treat, as my MD did. To be clear, I am not familiar with this particular 'Broken Brain' program and am only commenting on the use of Functional Medicine (FM) for ME/CFS.

@Sancar
If you are new here, please be sure to read the high intracranial pressure thread and what Dr. Diana Driscoll has written.

My apologies everyone. I thought I had fixed that link - in fact I did fix it - but I think I accidentally did using the Edge Browser which does not allow me to change things in a post..

I've had a cold and haven't been checking in....

(I'm just going to remove that horrible browser).

Click on this link to go to the registration page.

Sorry you have a cold Cort and goodness knows you deserve a break. I'm so bummed because the episode I'd like to watch most, #5 on Anxiety/Depression was yesterday. I know Dr. Hyman deserves to make money from this, it's always those of us with little resources who need the information the most and can't get access to it without paying $97. Hopefully this will be free on youtube at some point or perhaps one will be able to pay $3.99/episode to watch.

Typically they will run all episodes again for free on the last day so people who missed one can catch up. I don’t know for sure but it’s worth checking!

I've gotten about halfway through episode 3. It's definitely enlightening, and I feel reassured that I am on the right track by switching to a paleo diet and treating for candida overgrowth.
