Excellent news! Patients should never be forced to fund their own treatment just because medicine hasn't come up with all the answers yet...

A federal agency has removed some controversial guidelines which did not recognize Lyme as a chronic illness.
"After five years they're either [dropping] it or [they] recognized that, OK, this is a chronic disease/illness, and that’s what were hoping will happen because it will open the door for the doctors to actually be able to treat their patients," Serino said.

The guidelines, developed by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, also restricted antibiotic treatment to a maximum of four weeks. Experts say removing them could open the door to better treatments.

"I am delighted that the guidelines have finally removed this antiquated guidelines that have been so harmful to sick people who do not recover with two to four weeks of antibiotics," said Hudson Valley Lyme Disease Association Chairman Jill Auerbach. "We're all different, and a cookbook approach does not work for everybody."
