Aren't they cute?

HDC comes from grain beetles (common in our food because grain is everywhere and totally benign) and is similar to helminth therapy, but unlike that therapy, these critters are limited to the gut and cannot go systemic. This makes me think of them more like a probiotic.

Biome Restoration

HDC (Hymenolepis diminuta cysticercoids) is the larval stage of a small helminth(round worm). It grows in grain beetles, like mealy worm beetles, which were commonly in our food supply up until about 100 years ago.(biome restoration)

This therapy is a relatively novel concept of ingesting larval worms to restore our missing macrobiomes. At the recent TACA(Talk About Curing Autism) conference, Dr. Sidney Baker a renowned autism doctor shed light on this topic.

The hygeine hypothesis states that our immune systems are less adept at handling our current environment, because we are not exposed to a diversity of bacteria and parasites. Without this exposure autoimmunity, allergy and other chronic medical conditions can occur.

The theory behind this is fascinating, and I feel that there is a role for this in prevention and treatment of autoimmunity and other conditions that revolve around loss of bacterial diversity in the gut.

According to Dr Baker in the interview posted above, the HDC from the UK source are very good and work just fine. But you can also have your doctor call him and he will facilitate delivery of the HDC he is raising here. I called him today and nearly fell over when he answered the phone himself!

All in all, this is a very cheap therapy if you compare it to something like LDI. I'm curious if it works!

Dr Baker didn't recommend a dose...because he doesn't sell directly to patients. He recommends a dose to the doctor you work with and ships to the doctor, not the patient.

But these are the dosing instructions on the Biome Restoration website:

Dosing will certainly be very individual. Listen to your body, observe your children carefully. You will figure out the optimal dose for you.

People take varying amounts of HDC in weekly to monthly doses. (Biome Restoration recommends you do not take them more than once per week.) If you have concerns, discuss dosing with your doctor. A very small minority of people report some mild stomach upset with HDC ingestion. Simply drop your dose for a time, until this side effect vanishes.
Most people take a vial of 30-60 HDC every 2 to 3 weeks.

The most common protocol used in children is to start with 1 vial of 10 HDC. If no side effects occur, increase to 20 HDC in 2 or 3 weeks. If side effects are seen, stay at that dose for at least one more vial, in 2 or 3 weeks, typically until no side effects occur. Then proceed to a vial of 20 HDC and again, if no side effects are seen, move up to a maintenance subscription of a vial of 30 HDC in 2 or 3 weeks.

There are some children and adults on doses as high as 60 HDC every 2 weeks.

The risk of colonization, while very low, does exist, and may be more likely in children or in those who are immune-suppressed (see FAQ below “Who should not take HDCs?”). Two children, that we are aware of, over time developed severe stomach cramps associated with HDCs. If severe stomach upset occurs, discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately. This is what I got back from the company when I asked about adult dosing...

Sensitive adults (people who tend to react a lot to things) do often ramp up like the children. People though who generally tend to do well on things typically start at a vial of 30.

HDC and helminthic therapy are similar but not the same exactly. The idea behind both, tolerance, is similar though. I think HDCs are safer because they are confined to the gut.

The benefits devastatingly were short-lived and further FMTs failed to help but I am keen to try the HCTs but somehow need to contact Sid Baker as my condition is so severe and complex. Two things that hit me as I read your post...one is that it sounds an awful lot like abdominal migraines. Do you have traditional migraines ever? Sometimes, but not always, the two go together in that if you are predisposed to one, you may have the other as well.

Second, did you see the post on BPC-157? It's a peptide produced naturally and can heal the gut. It sounds kind of like a miracle. For the gut, you would take it orally rather than injecting it.

Thanks so much for your reply and apologies for my delay - I went into another of my agonising gut pain attacks -the returned increase in frequency is intolerable but i think, in part down, to me trying to cut down the extreme amount of magnesium citrate i am forced to take to eliminate even paritally in a hugely unnatural and explosive way. It seems i cannot do this until i find a way of restoring my biome and addressing the legion things i have tried and failed with over and over for nine long years!

I didnt have migraines until 2.5 yrs into my illness (xmas day 2010) and they really ratcheted up in volume in 2014. But gut attacks - though officially less strong in the horrific pain they mete out than the supersonic migraines i now get are so much worse because i cant cope with GI pain. I dont think they're abodminal migraines per se. But then not one thing i have ever found in any medical literature has come close to describing my GI symptoms or the pain attacks. All i know is i need my life back and my gut is at the core of doing so.

I cant speak due to severe sore throat and so cant call Dr Baker which is a real shame as i'd love someone to discuss my case with him. I've had good contact with his protegee - the mum with an autistic child who set up biome restoration in the UK but its such a guessing game as to a) whether it will help restore a massively microbially narrow biome to healthier diversity and at what stage to do it. I am sure pathogen killing needs to take place effectively but I only get worse on all attempts because my elimination and detox pathways are so screwed. Its a real impasse. I'd love to know you how get on with your HDCs (is it only possible through this forum or is there a way we can email?)

The BPC-157 thing i'd heard of vaguely but not looked into beyond the HR posting which didnt seem to say much. the other you provided is good. Aiding gut lining repair is certainly so key and i seem to have been told that L Glutamine (tried so many times before anywya and a gut repair formula i made myself with slippery elm, marshmallow root, marigold and chamomile powder was a bad thing as recent live blood cell analysis showed sky high oxalates and i eat so little anyway i cant control (and dont believe - for me - diet is the path to healing since i have done SO SO SO much on this front) having a really low oxalate diet. So the qtn remains - how does one aid healing the gut epithelium. Have you tried? If so i'd be fascinated to hear how anyone with severe GI problems got on with it?

If I'm reading this correctly I have a similar problem. I use mag citrate on desperate days, I also really like Fleet liquid glycerine suppositories and when I feel up to it I use a cleansing enema.

I just started taking digestive enzymes and that is really making a difference. Going almost every day.

I started with HDC on 10 July. I started with 20 HDC. I am hypersensitive to many things. At the same time I injected 1000 micrograms of hydroxocobalamine and 5mg folic acid and I also used four leeches...

I had no side effects for 4-5 days but since then it triggered my rapid cycling bipolar symptoms very heavy for 5 days. But I have no idea if this is due to the HDC, b12-depot or leeches. The reaction came up immediately after using the leeches, but this maybe coincidence. This was 4-5 days after first intake of HDC. I took the second dose HDC 11 days later, again 20. And again 4 days after that a flare of all symptoms came up. I cannot say for sure which triggered my symptoms. I jsut pray to god that they soon calm down because it is horrible. The reason I think it is due to the HDC is, that the flares are triggered by foods especially and come along with a weird sensation in my belly. This sensation was also there in the first 12 h after intake of HDC.

The supplier told me, that at first it may enhance inflammatory response before it can have a calming effect on my immune systems.

My advice for you is:
join the facebook group helminthic therapy and ask there. The administrator is really competent and you can trust him that he says just what he knows from either experience or scientific literature.


I did much research myself and as helminths do NOT decrease immunity against pathogens, I would recommend it as a trial. But if you are hypersensitive like me, start out with 10 for maybe a months and up the dose later if you can tolerate. I regret it to have used 20 but you never know before. 20 is a moderate dose for adults. But because of my sensitivity it was stupid.

Maybe I have to break my experiment because of my flaring rapid cycling which is horrible and dangerous because of mixed states of depression with agitation...


HDC has helped many patients who suffer from anxiety, bipolar disorder or depression. Mostly those people wanted to help their allergies or other issues and noticed that effect!
