From Suzy Chapman - The ICD reclassification is in beta stage; it may beclassified under diseases of the musculoskeletal and connective tissues

Proposed changes to Fibromyalgia's primary chapter location and parent class within ICD-11:
I'll be posting an expanded report on my site in the next few days, but in the meantime, a quick heads up:
In ICD-10, Fibromyalgia has been classified under Chapter XIII Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue under parent class:
M79 Other soft tissue disorders, not elsewhere classified, at M79.7 Fibromyalgia.

On May 5, it appears that FM was moved to the Symptoms and Signs chapter under chronic pain. Suzy's post states
Fibromyalgia is currently proposed to be classified under "Multi-site primary chronic pains syndromes" within a newly expanded Chronic pain section, under the chapter for Symptoms and signs, like so: http://apps.who.int/classifications/icd11/browse/f/en#/http://id.who.int/icd/entity/236601102Chapter: Symptoms, signs, clinical forms, and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified
> General symptoms, findings and clinical forms
> General symptoms
> Pain
> Chronic pain
> Primary chronic pain
> Multi-site primary chronic pains syndromes
> Fibromyalgia

This statement is misquoting me. The development of the WHO's ICD-11 is in Beta stage.

The relocation of Fibromyalgia (and some other ICD category terms) under a new chronic pain categories section within ICD-11's Chapter 21: Symptoms, signs, clinical forms, and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified, is a proposal. The content of ICD-11 is not yet approved by the Revision Steering Group.

So the title of this thread ought to be amended to "Fibromyalgia is proposed to be Given New ICD Classification."

The thread starter post by Cort is also missing links to key references, which include a proposals paper by Treede et al, published in June 2015, and links to detailed proposals, rationales and criteria that can be accessed on the ICD-11 Beta draft, via the Proposal Mechanism, by those who are registered with the Beta draft. They are not accessible in the Beta draft, itself.

These references and links had been included in a Twitlonger post that I linked to on @Dxrevsionwatch back in June. I've asked Cort, several times, if he would be kind enough to insert the URL for my brief Twitlonger report in order that readers of this forum have the necessary context into which these ICD-11 proposals for Fibromyalgia (and some other ICD category terms) can be placed. As this context has not yet been added to this thread, I will provide information, here, in the next few days.

These proposals also concern chronic widespread pain, irritable bowel syndrome, non specific chronic back pain and chronic pelvic pain. So the proposals potentially have wider interest beyond Fibromyalgia.

2.1. Chronic primary pain
Chronic primary pain is pain in 1 or more anatomic regions that persists or recurs for longer than 3 months and is associated with significant emotional distress or significant functional disability (interference with activities of daily life and participation in social roles) and that cannot be better explained by another chronic pain condition. This is a new phenomenological definition, created because the etiology is unknown for many forms of chronic pain. Common conditions such as, eg, back pain that is neither identified as musculoskeletal or neuropathic pain, chronic widespread pain, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowel syndrome will be found in this section and biological findings contributing to the pain problem may or may not be present. The term “primary pain” was chosen in close liaison with the ICD-11 revision committee, who felt this was the most widely acceptable term, in particular, from a nonspecialist perspective. Treede, Rief et al. June 2015

Thanks Suzy. Sorry to be incomplete :sorry:. I don't remember getting your requests (I'm behind on my emails) but I'm glad you're getting the information in here. If you'll put the URL in a reply I'll put it into the original document.

Hi Cort, I didn't contact by email, but via Twitter. Now that I have published a report (Part 1 and Part 2) on Dx Revision Watch, if you are posting links, it would be better to link to the reports:

That makes sense -- I am not good on twitter. Will do...
I fixed the title as well.
