Citing statistics indicating that 40 people die every day in the U.S. from prescription pain killer overdose, CDC director Tom Frieden bluntly called for doctors to stop over prescribing the drugs. The CDC’s voluntary guidelines called for opioid pain killers such as Vicodin and oxycontin to be the last resort for doctors – not the first one.
